 TRANSFER for DOS - Windows 95 Installation

Yes! TRANSFER for DOS (XFR) will run on a Windows 95 PC. You can still have read/write file access, directory management & LCN formatting of Bernoulli cartridges in 20MB and 150MB drives.

Background:

XFR has to ‘bypass’ the standard disk access mechanism of your operating system to talk to Honeywell files. A single platform had to be chosen, hence DOS was the obvious choice to satisfy the most users.

You Can’t:

Win95 is the underlying operating system in a ‘DOS Shell’ and when you ‘Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode’. Hence you cannot run XFR in either of these modes.

You Can:

  1. Bootup the PC without entering Win95. Use the F8 key to intercept the bootup and select the option that takes you to the ‘Command Prompt’. If you want to see all the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT lines execute, select ‘Step by Step’ mode. On fast Pentiums, you may have to practice with F8 – it’s quick.

  2. You can use a SCSI adapter from a vendor other than Iomega. You will have to load the ASPI manager from that vendor in order to ‘see’ the adapter. You must subsequently load the Iomega driver to allow XFR to see the drives. This takes patience since you may have to:

    1. load the adapter driver,
    2. comment out (with the REM statement) the ASPI line,
    3. delete the remaining driver lines,
    4. load the Iomega driver,
    5. replace the Iomega ASPI line with the previous ASPI line from the adapter vendor,
    6. reboot.
To Install the Iomega Drivers:
  1. Ensure the Bernoulli drive is powered and cabled properly. Insert an LCN formatted Bernoulli into the drive. It is best to use the latest DOS/Windows drivers: SCSI v2.2 or OAD v1.33i. The old Iomega RCD drivers (1991) will not work with fast PC’s (beyond 33 MHz).

  2. Boot up in DOS (step 3) and run INSTALL.EXE on the Iomega driver diskette. The procedure will want to reboot twice, you must ‘catch’ the bootup with F8 and walk through the rest of the bootup to ensure the adapter and the drives are found. The lines should look something like (i.e. may not need /speed command):

    In CONFIG.SYS:

    DEVICEHIGH = C:\IOMEGA\ASPIPPA3.SYS Scan /QUIET Country=001 /speed=3 DEVICE = C:\IOMEGA\SCSICFG.EXE /L=001 /V
    DEVICEHIGH = C:\IOMEGA\SCSIDRVR.SYS /L=001

In AUTOEXEC.BAT:

@SET SCSI_DRIVER = C:\IOMEGA
@SET SCSI_UTILITY = C:\IOMEGA

To Run TRANSFER for DOS:
  1. Load the XFR software. Locate the DOS-based mouse driver that came with your mouse manufacturer. This is likely on diskette with the name (mouse.com, lmouse.com, etc…). Load the mouse driver at the DOS prompt. You can check its operation by typing;

EDIT CONFIG.SYS

and ensure it works properly.

Change to the C:\TDE3000 directory (or wherever you loaded XFR), and type;

TRANSFER *.*
(a "No graphics screen or mouse found" message means a mouse problem).

You will now be in business. You will have to bootup in DOS every time you want to transfer LCN files.
