 Migrating to Windows 2000/XP?
Previous versions of Transfer will not work on Windows 2000/XP.

Within Windows 2000/XP, Microsoft kept the same Windows NT interface to SCSI drives, but changed the way the O/S talks to non-SCSI drives. You may recall that WinNT showed all drives (external parallel port or internal IDE/ATAPI Zip, internal hard drives, CD-ROMs, etc) under the 'SCSI Adaptors' icon in the Control Panel. Prior versions of XFR were written to use the ASPI interface to do an 'end run' around Windows and talk to an LCN-format disk directly. Win2000/XP removed the ASPI interface for non-SCSI drives, hence XFR couldn't talk to these drives.

XFR v7.0 was completely rewritten to talk to the physical drive (PD) reporting to Windows. This allows XFR v7.0/v8.0 to talk to LCN-formatted disks in the following Iomega drives:

  • Internal IDE/ATAPI Zip
  • External Parallel Port Zip
  • External USB Zip
  • External FireWire Zip
  • External and Internal SCSI Zip
  • External and Internal SCSI 150MB/230MB Bernoulli

As a result of reliance on the new drive access technology, v7.0 users accessing the PDs must have administrator privileges on the PC. Access to GUS emulated volumes are not restricted by this requirement. Administrator privileges are not required in v8.0, which relies on a new service component to undertake privileged access.

    Important Notes on XFR v7.0/v8.0:

  • Works with either 100MB or 250MB Zip drives (using LCN-format 100MB Zip disks).
  • You cannot LCN-format a 250MB Zip disk!
  • Works with either 150MB or 230MB Bernoulli drives (with LCN-format 35MB, 65MB or 150MB Bernoulli cartridges).
  • You cannot LCN-format 150MB or 230MB Bernoulli cartridges!
  • v7.0 only - Win2000/XP requires you to have administrator privileges to access drives with the PD drive technology.
